The 'Once Upon a Fairytale' Short Story Contest prizes

Welcome to our 5th annual November competition!

Once Upon a Fairytale Short Story Contest

Step 1: Choose Your Fairytale

From familiar favourites to the lesser known, there’s a vast array of fairytales to choose from! Pick one you’d like to reimagine. What would your own version look like?

It could be steampunk, historical fantasy, sci-fi, or even a contemporary mystery. The point is to get creative and have fun! (Even if you’re not into fairytales, your challenge is to retell one in a way that you would enjoy.)

Once you’ve selected your chosen fairytale, sharpen your quill, dust off your parchment, and get writing!

Note: For your own safety during this contest, please do not associate with spinning wheels, climb into pumpkins, or accept tasty morsels offered to you by ancient-looking strangers.

Step 2: Write Your Story

Write a 800-1,200 word retelling of your chosen fairytale. (Try to make it a complete story if you can.)

What we’re looking for…

  • A catchy opening to hook readers.
  • A fairytale retelling where the original is still recognisable. (Be creative, but we need to see the original tale in there somewhere.)
  • Good pacing – a balance between action and dialogue.
  • Well spaced paragraphs – not one big chunk of unbroken text. (Smaller and different-sized paragraphs make a story visually easier to read.)
  • And finally… something that other contestants will love to read!

Advanced Scribes: Ages 16-18

Your task is the same, except…

  • Your word count should be between 1,000-2,000 words.
  • The content of your story must still be fitting for a younger audience to read.

Entries close on November 22nd, in approximately...
